How to Estimate Horsepower from Quarter Mile Time

The most common formula is: HP = Weight / (ET / 5.825)³, where ET is the quarter mile elapsed time in seconds and weight is in pounds (including driver). This gives a rough crank horsepower estimate. The formula is most accurate for naturally-aspirated vehicles in the 10-17 second range.

Wheel HP vs. Crank HP

Dyno numbers measure wheel horsepower (WHP) — the power that actually reaches the ground. The engine produces more power at the crankshaft, but the transmission, driveshaft, differential, and axles absorb some of it as heat. This loss is typically 12-25% depending on the drivetrain layout.

Factors That Affect Quarter Mile Accuracy

  • Traction — wheel spin wastes power and inflates ET
  • Altitude — higher elevation means less air, less power
  • Temperature — hot air is less dense, reducing power
  • Driver skill — launch and shifting technique matter
  • Turbo / supercharged cars — formula less accurate for forced induction
  • Vehicle weight — always include driver weight in calculations

FAQ

Is wheel HP or crank HP more accurate?

Wheel HP is more meaningful because it measures the power actually delivered to the road. Manufacturers quote crank HP because it is a higher, more impressive number. When comparing cars, make sure you are comparing the same type of measurement.

Why do different dynos give different numbers?

Different dyno brands (Dynojet, Mustang, etc.) use different measurement methods. Dynojet dynos typically read 5-10% higher than Mustang dynos. Always compare numbers from the same type of dyno.

How accurate is the quarter mile HP formula?

The formula is typically accurate within 10-15% for naturally aspirated vehicles with good traction. Turbocharged vehicles, poor launches, and altitude can throw off the estimate significantly. Treat it as a ballpark, not a dyno replacement.
